Comments please

Write what you are thinking, wondering, what questions you have and what you are confused about. Also share any AHA's.

As you read this book, I want you to think about Steve and the position he is in. Is he guilty, innocent, or a little of both? How does he change THROUGHOUT the book?

Ask questions to me, to the other members of your group and make connections to your life or the lives of others.

  1. Well Steve is a very brave and strong boy and when i first stared reading this it melted my heart because i have had a brother in prison at 17 and he got out to years ago. This book is similar to some of the letters that my brother has wrote us in the past and i can relate to how scared he is.My brother once wrote it is very scary in here you have to watch your back at all times and that you should try to get along with people and make some friends cause it will past the time away faster. In the book Steve said the best time to cry is at night and he also wrote i have not used the bath room in a long time i still feel weird using the bathroom in front of somebody

  2. If he is guilty he has capture my heart. I'm pretty sure he learned his lesson but he deserves the time. He helped take a innocent life. I am really confused about what to belive. I am pretty sure he is part of the crime so HE needs to take responsibility. Everyone has been told to think before you act wiether it was told by your mother, teacher, book. You have heard it. A part stood out to me where he said he was a person and he deserves a chance. So did the owner of the store so what makes him so special.

  3. I actually really like this book. When I read it, I feel like I'm actually there. To me I honestly think that Steve is a little bit of both. I think that he was guilty because he was there and he was the lookout. I think hes innocent because he didn't actually shoot the store owner. The one thing that I don't get is why is he in court if people didn't see him actually do anything except tell Bobo and King when it was good to go into the store. If I were Steve, I would be scared to be in jail. I'm almost done with the book and so far its really good. I think that in the end Steve is gonna end up being innocent.

  4. Well, where I am in the book Steve seems really innocent and guilty. The reason i think that he is both is because that he was still there and even though he didn't kill the guy he was still involved with helping and setting it up.

  7. I think this is very good book.Steve is a very young character that is being charged with murder.James king was another accessory to the crime. They were both charged with felony murder, when they notice the store owner was dead another store clerk was goin to work and he realized the store owner Mr.Nesbitt was killed and ciggerates cartons were missing.Kathy O'brien is Steves defense attorney.

  8. I think that Steve is really suffering in jail. It really is too bad but, i think in some part he deserves it. He was involved in the robbery and that was a bad idea but, at the same time i don't think he killed the clerk. It was touching when his dad came to the courtroom and was talking to him about how he wanted his son to be just like him an that it broke his heart to see him in that courtroom. I think Steve needs to stop being so pessimistic on everything in the jail... make best of what you've got! even though there is not very much to make best of i think he can do it!

  9. i think that Steve was involved in the crime but didn't shoot or anything like that. I really like him and he just seems like a little child. Like he seems innocent of the murder but i think he knows he still has to do the time. I think that Steve will come out of jail and never do anything like that again. He is having a really hard time in jail and he definetly wont want to be put back in jail at any point later in his life. He is a good kid he just made some bad decisions. Like hanging out with the wrong people and wanting to fit in. You can tell he really cares about his family. He wants to be a good example for his little brother. But he made some mistakes. I think that overall Steve will learn alot when he is in jail.

  10. wow!this book is so good i feel really bad for Steve's mom and dad because they dreamed that his kid would have a great life but now he is in jail and that really sucks big time!!He looks like if he was a good boy and never meant to do anything bad he just probably fallowed other peoples example!!(Bobo and King)

  11. Well hi this is Terri again and this it a very good book i love .But one thing i think is wrong is monster has cut a deal with the lawyer to tell everything on his friends and he will get a good deal on jail ,because he can not spend more then 10 years in there. It's not that i think it's wrong it is just mean i guess but hey you did the crime you do the time. And he is doing anyhting to get him out of trouble.
